It is with a heavy heart that we bring you an episode of The Bench Units Podcast that strays from our usual medium of conversation and approach, as we feel compelled to address the grim reality that the world has been forced to face over the last fortnight.
While our hosts usually try to keep the podcast lighthearted and relatively free of sensitive political and global issues, the events that took place on the 25th May – the death of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis Police Officers – have forced us to reconsider that stance.
Willful ignorance of such occurrences, by the more privileged members of the public, is as big of a reason as any other as to why they continue to happen. In our effort to combat the systematic racism that has proven to still exist in this day and age, we have decided to use this episode of Bench Units to speak out against police brutality and in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign.
We acknowledge that our platform is relatively minor and with limited reach, and also that there are podcast hosts who are experts in this particular subject in a way that our hosts cannot claim to be. We do not claim to be presenting any cutting-edge, silver-bullet solutions to a problem that can be traced centuries into the past, but we ask that you recognise that spreading awareness and the means for us all to affect incremental, realistic change is key.
If you tune into this podcast for basketball talk and you don’t want to hear things getting political then we ask you, for at least 45 minutes, to seriously reconsider that stance in relation to why we are where we are.
